Forum Title: False Treads
How do I properly build out the nose of a stair tread to install a carpet runner between false tread caps without having the edges of the tread cap stick out?

I saw a solution on a job and took a picture! I'll post it when I get Home. 1/4 inch plywood jutting out to just shy of the nose.

So you have like 3/4 wood on the sides? On steps that we have had to modify, we added 1/4 or 3/8 to the tread and sometimes build the riser out. On that tread piece we ran it the length that needs to go out to the nose length thus it overhangs the nose. You then glue and screw in a filler under that overhang to give it strength as that is the area most walked on. Sometimes we flush cut off the existing nose to rebuild the step to the height and length we need. A little, like 1/8 gap on the tread piece to each side gives the carpet some room to tuck. Hope this makes sense.

I thought this was clever so I snapped a pic.
